LIFE FOR LIFELINES
Ensuring
safe ecological corridor
for breeding and migrating birds between the Alps and the Adriatic (acronym: LIFE FOR LIFELINES)
Škocjan Caves Park is a project partner of the LIFE FOR LIFELINES project
(LIFE23-NAT-SI-LIFE FOR LIFELINES, No. 101148381), co-funded by the European
LIFE Programme. The project aims to provide a safe ecological corridor for
birds between the Alps and the Adriatic. Within the corridor, direct measures
are foreseen to reduce large extent of negative impacts of the various energy
infrastructure on the endangered Griffon Vulture, Eurasian Eagle Owl,
Red-footed Falcon, Eurasian Curlew and other large birds. In addition to
innovations such as the development of bird-safe power lines, the project
supports a wide range of awareness-raising and educational activities on the
project themes and notably the establishment of a new nature protected area.
The project leader
is DOPPS-BirdLife Slovenia, in cooperation with other partners: Škocjan Caves Park, the Municipality of
Ilirska Bistrica & Elektro Primorska d.d.

Škocjan Caves Park is a project partner of the KRAS4US
project, which is part of the cooperation programme Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia 2021-2027.
The main objective of the project is to develop a strategy for a sustainable
management of Natura 2000 species and habitats in the cross-border Karst region
through development of a circular economy practice, benefiting both
biodiversity conservation and local users. The strategic role of the Kras4us
project will be framed by implementing pilot measurements and studies on the
possibility of using waste biomass in Karst areas (including post-wildfire
sites and overgrown Karst grasslands ‘gmajna’) and wood from non-native
invasive species for energy production.
In cooperation with the leading partner (the Faculty
of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies – Famnit of the
University of Primorska region) and project partners, DOOPS – BirdLife Slovenia
and GAL Carso, we will examine the status of biodiversity in cross-border areas
affected by wildfires and analyse the impact of different management practices
on the population status of indicator species in Karst. For the first time, a monitoring
of lesser known and monitored endangered species, such as short-toed snake
eagle, nightjar and stipa eriocaulis, will be carried out.

RES-MAB –
Promoting WEFE Nexus-based adaptation and mitigation solutions and landscape
resilience to climate change in the Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves, 2024-2027
PŠJ is RES-MAB project
partner, which is a PRIMA (Partnership for Research and Innovation in the
Mediterranean area) programme, supported by Horizon 2020, the European Union’s
Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The project includes ten
partners from seven Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves. It had started on 1 April
2024 and will run for three years, ending in April 2027.
The project’s
objective is to focus on promoting cross-sectoral policies based on sustainability
while enhancing an inclusive economic development (new job opportunities,
inclusion of vulnerable communities) by participation of seven countries
(Slovenia, Spain, France, Italy, Lebanon, Morocco, Jordan). It will promote sustainable
market solutions and engagement of private sector through implementation of
innovative initiatives in seven RES-MAB demo sites by implementing WEFE
solutions. Furthermore, the approach will be tested in individual Mediterranean
biosphere reserves,
tailored to their specific characteristics and contexts. Based on the WEFE-Nexus model, the integrated water–energy–food–ecosystem
concept is applied to promote sustainability and climate change mitigation,
represented by an integrative resource management.
As biosphere reserve
demo site, Škocjan Caves Park Biosphere Reserve will establish a Fruit and
Vegetable Processing Centre in Brkini region. The main purpose of the Centre is
to promote self-sufficiency, provide added value of local produce and to
contribute to more sustainable and climate-change-adaptive practices in the
area.
