Construction works have commenced for the restoration of eight ponds and a karst spring in the municipalities of Pivka, Ilirska Bistrica, Divača, and Hrpelje Kozina.
With the assistance of an external contractor, we have cleared overgrowth and deepened the water basins, cleaned silt and debris in some areas, and reinforced the waterproof layer with clay. In the restoration of ponds that have been dry for some time, we are ensuring impermeability by installing a membrane that does not release harmful substances into the environment or harm living organisms. Maintenance of the pond requires greater attention to prevent damage to the membrane. Additionally, pond banks should not be too steep to provide safe access and retreat for animals using the ponds as watering holes.
After restoration, the ponds will provide suitable habitat for amphibians, dragonflies, and other aquatic organisms. They will mitigate the effects of climate change by retaining water during periods of excess and cooling the surrounding area during droughts.
The project is co-financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway through the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area 2014-2021, as well as the Republic of Slovenia in the amount of EUR 1.196.385,00.
