Grasslands Restoration

Eastern sub-Mediterranean dry grasslands represent one of the most diverse yet threatened environments globally. They are home to European priority Natura 2000 species such as the Marsh fritillary, Red-backed Shrike, Adriatic Lizard Orchid, and Lesser horseshoe bat. Grasslands rapidly become overgrown, making their natural and moderate use crucial for their survival. As part of the ReNature project, we are restoring 45 hectares of grassland ecosystems that are becoming overgrown.

In January, work began on Vremščica, where the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, in collaboration with the Agricultural Community of Gabrče, will clear overgrowth on 39 hectares of overgrown areas. The cleared area will be designated for grazing by the autochthonous Istrian sheep breed, which will prevent re-overgrowth.
The Municipality of Pivka has also commenced work, planning to restore 6 hectares of meadow areas across various locations in the Košana Valley and establish a high-stemmed meadow orchard with old autochthonous apple varieties such as carjevič, goriška sevka, mošancelj, and others.

The project is co-financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway through the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area 2014-2021, as well as the Republic of Slovenia in the amount of EUR 1.196.385,00.
