Camping within the Škocjan Caves Regional Park is strictly prohibited
The Škocjan Caves are the first site in Slovenia and in the Classical Karst region to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This inscription ranks them among the most important natural monuments in the world. The caves are also part of the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance, as the first underground wetland ever recognized globally. Together with the underground flow of the Reka River, they form one of the longest karst underground wetlands in Europe.
The Škocjan Caves are included in the MAB Programme – Man and the Biosphere, meaning they are part of UNESCO’s global network of biosphere reserves, where biodiversity is protected and sustainable development is promoted. There are only 19 sites in the world that are simultaneously listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a Ramsar Wetland, and part of the MAB Programme – the Škocjan Caves are one of these rare areas.
The Škocjan Caves Regional Park is located in the heart of the so-called Classical Karst. This area represents a globally unique and exceptionally characteristic karst landscape, where the highest concentration of natural values and heritage in the form of karst phenomena and other natural features can be found in one place. Combined with its cave system, collapse dolines, and individual natural monuments, the park forms a typical example of karst “architecture.”
The extraordinary diversity of plant and animal life, coexisting in such harmony within a small area, makes this region rich in both biotic and abiotic features—a place that is both fascinating and fragile. It is our shared responsibility to protect this area, and we kindly invite you to help us in doing so.
Due to the need to preserve nature and maintain peace in the environment, special rules apply in the park, which we ask you to respect.
